SHIT WAIT

Why do so many of them wear greeeen?

Well I mean, I could tell you why it’s a combination at all. It’s really just simple color theory.

Using the RYB color wheel, red and green are complimentary (opposite on the wheel). A lot of these character have a complimentary or split-complimentary color palette.

Which, cool, ok, that’s fine, but why is it the same palette used so much???

I also don’t get why it seems the RYB wheel is used so much more still. The RYB wheel is for pigment, the RGB wheel is for light, and the CMY(K) wheel is used for printing.

So why, when most TVs use RGB (LIGHT) displays, would you still make so many character’s color palettes based on the pigment color wheel?? And why is one used so much more than the others????

maybe it’s just a personal preference idk

I knew about the complimentary colours thing, since most cartoons are based on simple colours.

I imagine RYB is used more because that’s what people *learn*. Like, if you go to art classes, or look up how to do colour theory etc. most places will use RYB. So animators and designers learn these as the complimentary colours, then use that in their designs, and using other colour wheels might be strange for them. Who knows what a RGB based cartoon would look like…

That’s just my guess anyway haha.

I figured either that, or that animation cells used to be mostly hand-painted. Using actual paint.

That doesn’t change the fact that people still seem to prefer the red/orange-green color scheme??? There’s probably a psychological reason
